Web Design Frequently Asked Questions

Do I register a domain?
Yes, and make sure it is under your name - very important. The registrant on record has all legal rights to the domain. Some design or hosting companies will purchase the URL and place it under their name.

What domain name should I choose and what if the one I want is not available?
First, choose a domain name that is easy to say and spell. Second, depending on how you plan to market the site, consider including an important search phrase in the domain name. Since most common business and personal names have been snatched up, try adding "go", "the", "my", "best" or other words that enhance your domain.

What is the design process and how long does it take to complete the web site?
The design process can take 2-6 weeks, possibly longer if the site is large or has a lot of content. Depending on the design requirements per the concept and functionalites required, the build portion of the project can take 2 weeks to 2 months. Before starting any project, phases to the project are set up and agreed upon.

How much money does it cost to have a web site built?
This is a very broad yet common question. For the most part we sites have many parts and can be complicated to quote. Basically, it comes down to time that will be spent creating your design. What kind of web design are you looking for? Are you in need of special coding on the back end? Are you providing your own pictures and content? All these factors and many more help to determine the cost of the website. There is an art to quoting a web site and luckily 9 Gears Media have been quoting sites for over 10 years now in the Austin area.

Do you provide web site maintenance after the site is finished?
Yes, to keep your site fresh and up to date, we provide ongoing support and maintenace on all web sites we build and those we did not design or build. To be truly effective a website needs to be ever-changing.

In what format should I supply words and photographs about my business for my new we site.
It is helpful to us if you are able to provide text and photographs in electronic form. For example, the files output by a digital camera and the text in a document form. If this is not possible, we can help get your information ready for use on the website.

I run a small/medium size business and want an online presence to help promote my business in a more professional manner. What do I need to accomplish this?
You need a professionally developed website, a domain name, and a hosting service. We can help you with all of these.
